On the hunt for a new men’s grooming essential? Every week, our grooming expert, Lee Kynaston, will be rounding up the best grooming products that have earned his seal of approval.
This week, he talks all things shaving and the four DIY barbershop must-haves to try now…
The DIY barbershop shave
If you’ve ever paid for a professional wet shave you’ll know that there’s nothing quite like it for smoothing the skin and soothing the mind. It’s a grooming experience you can recreate at home, though.
After cleansing, soak a hand towel (or specialist shave towel) in hot water, wring out and plonk over your face to relax skin and open pores. (I add a few drops of lavender oil to calm the mind.) Sit back and leave on your face for five minutes, then shave as normal (take time to whip up a lather with a trad shaving brush), before rinsing with cool water.
Finally, soothe skin with Barber Pro’s Cooling Mask, relax and leave on for 15 minutes, applying a second damp towel – chilled this time – to make it extra calming. All you have to do then is pay yourself the £40 a trad hot-towel shave might cost you. Result.
